Right from the jump: Women's Jordan 1 and Beyond
By now, it’s no secret that Michael Jordan took the world by storm when he hit the professional hardwood in 1984. He began turning heads for more than just his basketball when his Air Jordan signature basketball shoes like the Jordan 1 began gracing the shelves at shoe stores all across the country.
As boys and men were snatching those shoes off the shelves, there was another group that was paying attention, too. But even as the Jordan culture began to take root and grow, women had to be content with wearing the same Jays as their brothers, dads, and guy friends but in smaller – sometimes children’s – sizes.
Speaking of Women's Jordans...
In recent years, while women have begun raising their voices in a variety of areas, they’ve also begun speaking out with their wallets. The Jordan brand, finally at a place where it made sense for such a seismic shift, listened and began producing women’s Jordans shoes like the Air Jordan 1 for women.
Those offerings, cast on a slightly narrower last to accommodate a woman’s unique foot structure, include all the same throwback “retro” models that the guys have enjoyed for so long.
There’s the women’s Jordan Retro 11 Low, for example, which replaces the familiar patent leather vamp with one of pink snakeskin.
Or the women’s Jordan Retro 8, which offers the same silhouette as the men’s 1992 release but in female-informed colorways such as the White/Varsity Red/Bright Concord.
The women’s Jordan AJ 1 Mid features colorways such as Bright Crimson/Black and all-white, not dissimilar from men’s color schemes, but in that special construction that’s built for a woman’s comfort.

Just because women now have Jordan shoes and apparel built specifically for them, that certainly doesn’t mean they’re not allowed to browse what’s available for men and kids. All foot types are different, after all, so if a men’s or larger kids’ size fits, wear it! Just remember the approximate guideline of dropping 1.5 sizes from your women’s size to find your men’s size. (So a women’s size 9 would be roughly equivalent to a men’s size 7.5.)
