While the brand was founded in 1898, the 1981 Saucony Jazz is the brand's best-known model. After a resurgence in the 1970s, thanks to a renewed focus on running for fitness, Saucony hit gold with the introduction of the Jazz. The creation of the Saucony Jazz was the result of working closely with a team of podiatrists, lead by podiatrist Frank Santopietro, aiming to keep the foot comfortable and able to handle the impact of distance running. The result was a running shoe that was lighter in weight and incredibly well-balanced. The signature detail from the Jazz that was carried into other Saucony models was the Maxitrac outsole. The triangular lug outsole was not only for looks, it also provided additional traction through a piston-like suspension system. A padded tongue and collar were included for additional comfort. Other significant details of the Jazz include a lacing system that adjusted the sneaker to the width of the foot and a machine-washable sock insert that molded to the shape of the foot.
Top Honors from Runners
All of the details of the Saucony Jazz resulted in praise from the running community. The model received a five-star rating from Runner’s World magazine. It was praised for its light weight, comfort, and protection from additional running organizations and publications as well. With its reasonable price and high quality, the Jazz helped push Saucony to become a leading footwear brand into the 1980s. The classic low-top running silhouette has withstood the test of time through a simplistic style and tasteful colorways as it continues to be one of Saucony's top-selling models year after year. Over the decades the model has been remixed with new materials and looks, not only from Saucony, but through collaborations with brands such as White Mountaineering. As the brand’s signature silhouette, and arguably one of the most comfortable women's casual shoes on the market, the Saucony Jazz is deserving of the kudos it continues to receive.
